We arrive, locate the access lid, open it, and pump the tank down — liquid and the settled sludge layer both. A tank that is only skimmed off the top gets you back on the phone within a year, so the sludge is the part that matters. While the tank is open we look at the inlet and outlet baffles, the lid and riser condition, and the liquid level, because that level tells us whether the drainfield is accepting water or starting to fail.

How often should a septic tank be pumped in Arizona?

Every 3 to 5 years for most White Mountains homes. The interval comes down to tank size, how many people live there full time, and whether the household runs a garbage disposal. A 1,000-gallon tank with four full-time residents is a three-year tank. A 1,500-gallon tank with two people can go five or more.
